It is generally accepted that generators and starters are from the category of units that do not need maintenance. There is some truth in this. Well, what automaker, especially now, will scare its potential client with another line in the list of service operations. And auto companies and people whose cars are still under warranty do not need it. Another thing is the actual operation of vehicles with a mileage exceeding 100,000 km. It turns out that the repair of these nodes is a popular service, on which several structures with a developed network of reception points can earn money in a small regional centre.
Do we need it? Yes!
As with other components and assemblies of a car, for the generator and starter, many engineers could credit themselves with their contribution to their invention and modernization. Moreover, the generator at the beginning of its life was not at all considered an exclusively prerogative of cars and, in principle, vehicles. It is only known that the first theoretical calculations about the appearance of a current due to a magnetic field, made by the English physicist Faraday, were obtained in the 1830s. And literally a year later, by order of the physicist Ampere, the first stationary generator was created.
The magnet surrounded by coils had to be rotated manually. But a rectifier was already provided that converts alternating current into direct current. At the same time, the Russian scientist Lenz suggested that an electric motor could work as a generator, that is, generate current, and proved this in practice. A decade and a half later, designers were already creating generators with might and main, and replacing natural (so-called permanent) magnets with an artificial electrical analogue.
The paradox: the internal combustion engine already existed, and electric cars were produced on both sides of the ocean (albeit in small batches). And the cars “on fuel” have not yet received a generator. And even the starter has not excited the minds of either engineers or industrialists for almost a decade and a half. Yes, at some point in history, the fates of these knots were closely intertwined. True, at the end of the 19th century, the starter nevertheless entered the scene as a separate unit. Someone Clyde Cowman proposed an electric motor to start the engine. Details about its structure have not been preserved. It is believed only that it had flaws and was rejected by automakers. The attitude of the latter to the future starter is well demonstrated by another invention – Charles Kettering, presented in 1911. He was not ridiculed for a little, declaring – in order to start the engine, an electric motor comparable in size and power is needed. And for him – batteries of huge capacity. In vain did the inventor prove that there is already a positive operational example. He managed to replace the handle on National cash registers with an electric motor.
A tragic incident helped to master the auto starter. Starting the engine from a “frenzied” handle – a crooked starter, as it was later called – a friend of Henry Leland, the founder of the Cadillac concern, died. And he promised to solve the problem of manual start. And that’s right – the handle caused a lot of injuries, and it was just uncomfortable. And Kettering only successfully got into the field of vision of the all-powerful boss.
