10 tips for taking care of your car

Every day we take care of many things: our body, home, pets. The car also needs some care because it is always ready to take us from one point to another at all times.

Here are ten tips to better take care of our cars.

1. Carry out major maintenance

A car, however reliable it may be, will always need maintenance when it reaches a certain age. Just as a man of a certain age thinks that perhaps it is appropriate to book a check-up in a health center, in the same way the car will have to be brought to your trusted mechanic to be checked periodically. In this way it is possible to replace more or less expensive elements which, if excessively worn, could break, sometimes causing much more serious problems. It is impressive how sometimes, with a relatively low cost, it is possible to avoid replacing much more expensive elements.

2. Check for yourself what you succeed

Not everyone is able to perform maintenance on their car. Some of you will feel like a child in front of a nuclear physics book when you open the hood. This is not a problem: everyone has their own skills. However, if you are able to perform some small checks on your own it is an excellent result. Some basic elements to check are:

  • The pressure of the tires (especially before a long trip is ideal check that the tire pressure is equal to that which is indicated on the appropriate adhesive which can be read on the side of the driver’s door once it has been opened).
  • Engine oil : engines work thanks to the movement of numerous moving parts which, as such, must be constantly lubricated to prevent them from breaking. You can therefore verify that there is a sufficient quantity of engine oil using the appropriate yellow rod: with the car stopped and the engine turned off for a while, remove the rod, dry it and put it back in position, take it out again and check that it is dirty in an area between the minimum and maximum indicated on it. If you need to top up, use the same type of oil indicated by the manufacturer (even better if it is of the same brand as the one already contained) to prevent lumps or solid deposits from forming.
  • Brake fluid : this can be checked visually thanks to the special tank inside the bonnet. The fluid must be within the minimum and maximum levels to ensure proper operation of the braking system.
  • The washer fluid : many manufacturers do not create tanks whose contents can be verified therefore, in case of doubt, top up the contents with the special liquid that can be easily found on the market even in convenient five-liter economic bins.
  • If you are able, check the wear of the brake pads .
  • The wiper blades that must not be dry or damaged.
  • The operation of the bulbs .
  • L ‘ tire wear .

Closed these two macro chapters, let’s see other small tips to protect your car.

3. The garage

Thanks to a garage, your car can sleep peacefully when not in use. First, it won’t be at the mercy of bad guys who might have seen you use it. Secondly, it will not be exposed to sunlight during the summer days and, in this way, the interiors and the paint will thank you.

4. The alarm

With a good anti-theft device equipped with satellite locator, anti-lifting and immobilizer you will have the possibility to protect the car from thieves and robbers. If you usually park in dark, isolated and uncrowded places, a good set of mechanical alarms will be for you: they will not prevent the thief from stealing your car but will waste a lot of time (for example in removing the steering lock) and will risk be seen by any passersby while the siren sounds.

5. Comprehensive insurance

An insurance will not materially protect your vehicle but will allow you to obtain more or less rapid compensation based on the contract you have stipulated with the company in the event of: natural events such as a hailstorm, theft, various damages and accidents. There are many policies with related packages: choose the one that suits you (eg theft and fire, glass policy, vandalism, etc.). Keep in mind, also in relation to point 4, that in some cases the insurance will apply discounts in case of installation of a specific anti-theft device.
